Sports & Culture: Daring to Excel

A Sporting Tradition

 

Competitiveness, camaraderie and sportsmanship trace back to the Naga warrior tradition, and Nagaland Police has long channelled that spirit into organised sport. The force holds an annual Police Duty and Sports Meet where units compete across disciplines, and its top performers regularly go on to represent the state — particularly in boxing, badminton, archery, martial arts and football.

The Nagaland Police football team has an outstanding record, having won the B.N. Mullik All India Police Football Championship twice, finished runner-up twice, and placed third six times since 1971. A sample of the team’s honours

Individual Achievers

•     Chekrovolu Swuro, Sub-Inspector — a regular member of the Indian archery team with numerous international and national achievements.

•     Nagaland Police Badminton Team (2008) — at the first All India Police Badminton Championship, Shri K. Kire, IPS (Addl. DGP) and Shri Imlisunep took runners-up titles in the 50-plus category and men’s doubles respectively, while Shri Vizhoto Hibo won the men’s singles title.

•     Dy. S. Israel G. Xuivi — has represented India at the World and Asian Taekwondo Championships, managed the Nagaland Police Taekwondo team, and founded ‘Kiti-do’, a Naga martial art based on traditional Sumi kick-fighting techniques, now recognised as a national sport by the Martial Art Games Federation of India.

Music

Music has long held an honoured place in Nagaland Police’s traditions, with several professional bands keeping pipe, brass and jazz traditions alive:

•     3rd NAP Pipe Band — set up in 1967; won the Nagaland Police Battalion Band Platoon Competition in 1989.

•     PTS Brass Band (1972) and 4th NAP Brass Band (1974).

•     5th NAP Brass Band — formed in 1978.

•     9th NAP (IR) Brass Band.

 

•     DGP Jazz Band — launched on 4 April 1976, originally a civilian group called ‘The Rivals’ before its members joined the police as the 4th NAP Jazz Band; later redesignated the DGP Band, it has won the North-East Regional Beat Contest in New Delhi and performs everything from heavy metal to traditional blues at official and charity events.

The Nagaland Police Family

Beyond active duty, the Nagaland Police Family Welfare initiative looks after the wellbeing of personnel’s families, with wives and family members across units actively involved in charitable work — a reminder that the force’s motto of Security, Service and Sacrifice extends to the families who support it.
