Nagaland Police

Tours of Duty & Achievements

Serving Beyond the State

In recognition of its discipline and
effectiveness, Nagaland Police has repeatedly been called upon by the
Government of India to serve outside Nagaland.

General Elections Duty

Nagaland Police personnel have been
deployed for election duty in Tripura, Meghalaya, and Darjeeling in West
Bengal. The first contingent sent to Tripura in 1988 was led by Shri T.M. Wati,
with a second group led by Shri M.V. Chakhesang.

Law & Order Duty — the Terai Region

When Sikh extremists of the Khalistan
movement took shelter among Sikh farming communities in the Terai region of
Uttar Pradesh, the Ministry of Home Affairs requisitioned a battalion of the
Nagaland Armed Police. The Special NAP (SNAP), under Commandant Shri O. Alem,
IPS, was deployed to Kashipur and successfully brought the situation under
control, later moving on to law-and-order duties in Delhi.

Anti-Naxal Duty — Chhattisgarh

From July 2006, the 9th NAP Bn (IR) was deployed for
two years in the Naxal-affected Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh. Operating
in dense, inaccessible forest terrain, the battalion — popularly known as the
‘Naga Force’ — launched a series of offensive operations that dealt a
significant blow to Naxalite guerrilla bases and earned the confidence of the
local population

UN Peacekeeping Missions

Nagaland Police officers have served as part of Indian Police contingents on United Nations peacekeeping missions, including UNMIBH (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and UNMIK (Kosovo) — conducting elections, maintaining law and order, assisting refugee rehabilitation, and coordinating community policing alongside NATO forces and other UN agencies.

At present, the 1st NAP battalion and three companies of the 2nd NAP battalion are deployed in New Delhi, carrying out law-and-order duties and guarding vital installations and VIP areas.

Police Commemoration Day

Every year on 21 October, police forces across India observe Police Commemoration Day in honour of personnel who have given their lives in the line of duty. The date marks the 1959 ambush of a CRPF patrol near the Chang Chenmo river in Ladakh’s Hot Springs area, in which eight policemen were killed.
